Soul Random: Badu Baby Name, QTip/Prince, Raheem/Prince/Luther, Nas, Winehouse, Beastie Boys, The Grammys

Soul randomness as seen around the net…….

Badu’s baby name is out of this world. We congratulated Erykah Badu & Jay Electronica on the birth of their daughter on Sunday. According to Erykah Badu’s twitter page, their new baby daughter’s name is MARS MERKABA.

fatbellybella – our daughter’s name is MARS MERKABA

Speaking of twitter, these seven words from QTip set my heart aflutter:

QtipTheAbstract – About to shoot a video with prince.

Could this be a video for one of Prince’s three upcoming albums? I knew when this happened something was bound to pop off.

Speaking of Prince (and you know I’m always speaking of Prince), Raheem Devaughn covered Al B. Sure, now he’s covering the Purple One. Listen to Raheem’s version of Prince’s “I Would Die For You.” Check out his myspace page for a cover of Luther Vandross’ “Never Too Much.”

According to Billboard, Nas is set to release a track on Dr. Dre’s urban myth…I mean long-awaited upcoming album “Detox.” Other than that Nas says he is “chilling out” these days, “trying to get myself together creatively [and] just [keeping] my head all straight to figure out what the next move is.” Hmmm, no mention of wife Kelis’ pregnancy. Wonder if that’s just a myth too.

The good news…Amy Winehouse is recording another album. The “interesting” news…she’s recording in a place that some may call the Cannibus Capital or Ganja Central, Jamaica. Isn’t that like a diabetic sampling an all-you-can-eat buffet at a candy store? “insert your own joke here.”

The Beastie Boys are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their classic album “Paul’s Boutique” with a reissued, remastered edition and a commemorative website. Time for us b-boys & b-girls to revisit some of our youth and time for you youngins to discover what the Shadrach Hip Hop was back in the day with it’s early examples of sampling and dope beats.

Rolling Stone reports that Kanye West will be performing at the Sunday, February 8 Grammy ceremony along with Estelle. Other performers scheduled to appear include Ne-Yo, Jamie Foxx, Adele, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, T.I., Jennifer Hudson, M.I.A., Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Terence Blanchard, Robin Thicke and there will be an all-star tribute to Bo Diddley. Good luck to all the artists, especially all the soul artists nominated.

As a fellow Prince lover, I am usually disappointed in covers and remakes (see Tom Jones, Ginuwine, and Mariah Carey for reference) but this is pretty cool. I’ll but it in the “passable” category with TLC’s “If I Was Your Girlfriend.”

I LIKE Raheem’s remake… definitely put his stamp on it!! (KB, I thought TLC’s remake was more than just passable, that was my favorite joint off that album! *smile*)
