Conversation with Dwele

Dwele was the first artist I interviewed on the blog almost three years ago and a favorite for many years before that but I’m not the only music lover who’s had an undying affection for the Detroit singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. There’s an ever growing, devoted fan base who recognize Dwele as one of the most consistent and prolific artists of the modern soul era and who secretly search for and covet his unreleased songs like the holy grail of soul. From his crowd pleasing, constant touring to contributing hooks to hip hop artists like Slum Village, Common and Kanye West and securing two Grammy nominations in one year Dwele’s seemed to avoid the pitfall of some notable soul artists who often find themselves shelved by a record label or who’ve become members of the “where are they now” club.
In 2003 Dwele released the sublime “Subject,” his first offering on a major label followed in 2005 by his jazzy soul contribution “Some Kinda.” 2008 finds Dwele on a new label (Koch Records) releasing his third album, Sketches of a Man (or fourth if you consider his underground, much bootlegged album “Rize” as his first). This time out he’s working with producers Nottz and G1 but still writing and producing the majority of the record’s smooth and hypnotically funky grooves. As you nod your head and sing along you may find yourself wondering how close the tales of love and life are to his real life. You may also find yourself reflecting on how this undeniably talented showman has remained so underrated and under the radar. Perhaps the music industry really is 4,080 shades of crazy. If for some crazy reason you decide to never buy another album, make sure Dwele’s Sketches of a Man
album is the last one you purchase. No record collection would be complete without it.
In this conversation Dwele discusses his new CD Sketches of a Man, his past and future music, tells us how he feels about his bootlegged music and he even addresses the mysterious Elluud, the Breakfast Club and johnsmyname projects.

WELL SIS WHAT CAN I SAY BUT WE RIDE WITH DWELE. GREAT INTERVIEW!!! DWELE’S SKETCHES OF A MAN IS A TRULY INCREDIBLE AND SOULFUL WORK OF ART THAT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME. I BOUGHT THE LAST COPY OFF THE SHELF AT BEST BUY. IN TODAYS WORLD MUSIC CAN SOMETIMES BE IN DANGER WHEN IT FALLS IN THE HANDS OF THE WRONG PEOPLE,BUT REST ASSURE THAT WHEN DWELE’S BEHIND THE MUSIC IT IS SAFE AND SOUND AND INFINANT POSSIBILITIES ARE ALWAYS ON THE HORIZON.
—DRE' ROCKI have been a DWELE fan since the SUBJECT album. Although I never heard the RIZE album, I can definitely say DWELE is my favorite artist. I can listen to any of his albums over and over. He has the entire package. This brotha can groove to any genre of music and it’s apparent with the grammy nominations. I’m here in INDIANAPOLIS, IN. I tell everyone when I get the opportunity to go buy his album. I’ll be in Chicago in August to check him out. I know for a fact that I have over 100 people lovin the music of DWELE… I even let people listen to a sample of mine. I don’t know about the rest of the country, but DWELE will be getting love in the NAP. You can believe that!
