Conversation with Lalah Hathaway

What’s in a name? If you’ve heard music in the last 30 years then you’ve heard Donny Hathaway’s name and influence in many ways. I got a chance to speak with his equally gifted daughter Lalah Hathaway. Although she’s got the musical DNA to continue the legacy of her famous surname, she is a singular artist building her own reputation as one of the most talented vocalists of our generation. On the new Interpretations: Celebrating the Music of Earth, Wind & Fire album, Lalah’s cover of “Love’s Holiday” with it’s ambient vibe and lush vocals further prove that she is a song stylist well-versed in R&B, soul and jazz.
In this fun and informative conversation Lalah Hathaway talks about her new record deal and a new project with Rahsaan Patterson. She speaks about the trauma of losing her father and touring with the daughters of other soul legends. We’ll find out what she’d be doing if she weren’t a musician and how she would change the music industry. Also listen for the nickname I gave her and how she lives up to it.
