Conversation with Maurice White

Maurice White interview on HoneySoul.com

by Vonnie “Honey” Woods

Visionaries in music don’t come any mightier than Maurice White. As the founder of the band Earth Wind & Fire, he shrewdly assembled “the elements” that crafted a mold-shattering music machine.

Now, 37 years after Earth Wind & Fire’s 1970 debut, a stellar collection of contemporary soul disciples has created a tribute to Maurice White with Interpretations: Celebrating The Music of Earth Wind & Fire – ten of “The Fire’s” most memorable pieces as rendered by ten contemporary artists who owe the group a substantial measure of debt. This auspicious project will be the inaugural release for Concord’s newly reactivated Stax label. Features Angie Stone, Kirk Franklin, Chaka Khan, Ledisi, The Randy Watson Experience featuring Bilal, Dwele, Meshell Ndegeocello, Lalah Hathaway, Musiq Soulchild, and Mint Condition.

    SOME OF YOUR SONGS

Some of your songs, they raised my mind
to cloudless skies of peace and pride
    evolving rainbow colored faith
to guide my love on truthful ways

Your songs, they led this heart of mine
    to meadows waving drewdrops shine
to keep alive my trust and hopes
    in magical caleidoscopes

Between those songs, but all around
like shining sparks – Kalimba sounds.

Some of your songs, they took my soul
to valleys bathed in sunrise gold
where dreams may root and grow like trees
    encircled by your melodies

Once all your songs will meet as one,
to send a spark to Egypt´s sun
REese´s light keeps shining, warm and true,
Inside your songs, inside of you.

It is challenging for me to express what Maurice White and Earth Wind & Fire has meant to my life over the past
thirty years. Through my formative years right into my adult years. Always positive uplifting, and words filled
with hope. Still today my most(next to Christ) cherished messengers.

Maurice White and Earth Wind and Fire have brought me so much joy in my life with their music. They are the epitomy of brilliance and perfection. I was 11 years old when heard EWF for the first time singing “Mighty Mighty” on the radio in New Orleans. I instantly became hooked and have been EWF’s number one fan ever since. I am glad to hear that Mr. White is doing fine and I will forever love him and EWF. They are the best ever!

Norvell Campbell from Memphis Tennessee was helpful in teaching Maurice White the ropes when he was a teenager just learning how to “gig”. Norvell is one of the people who helped to make Beale Street great.

He will be celebrating his 79th birthday tomorrow, August 14th. He is in poor health and we want to make this a special day for him. If some one could convey this to Maurice, I am sure the mention of Norvell’s name will bring happy memories to him.

If you can get this message to Maurice and he can send Norvell a card or something , it would be greatly appreciated. It will make an old man very happy.

I am a faithful and ardent fan of Maurice White and Earth,Wind,And Fire. They caught my attention during my junior high school years back in the seventies. I have the utmost respect for Mr.White and the vision he had when he founded the group in 1969. He had vision and maturity beyond his years, and he handled the creative and financial ends of his group effectively. He has a lot of love, peace, and positive energy giving God the glory and the praise for being the Creator and the source of his success. He and I agree about the different genres of music being recognized and used to entertain and uplift the spirits of others. I love the jazz, rhythm and blues, rock, and superb instrumentation and musicianship that he utilizes in bringing us joy, rhythm, and grooves that are great. Mr. White, you are a man of substance, character, and integrity, and you “give back” which is a quality that keeps you humble and grounded. Hats off to you,Mr.White, and the great contribution you are making to the world to make it a better place.
