Conversation with Chaka Khan

Chaka Khan on HoneySoul.com

by Vonnie “Honey” Woods

Chaka Khan is a star. Not only in the pop culture sense but also in the astrological connotation.

*star – Astrology. a heavenly body, esp. a planet, considered as influencing humankind and events.

Indeed Chaka Khan’s impact has forever changed those of us within the radius of her soulful orbit. Her path to star status began soon after she adopted the African name “Chaka” while working as a volunteer on the Black Panthers’ Free Breakfast for Children program. Her gravitational pull grew stronger with her 1973 debut with band Rufus. Solo stardom, hits in numerous genres, eight grammy’s and dozens of gold and platinum albums followed her ascent into the stratosphere.

Chaka Khan appears on the upcoming Interpretations: Celebrating the Music of Earth, Wind, & Fire CD. Fittingly she chose to remake “Shining Star,” an interpretation marked by her powerhouse vocals and deep rooted funkiness.

Listen to the interview to find out what Janet Jackson and Chaka Khan have in common, who will make an appearance on Chaka’s upcoming album, news of a possible Rufus reunion, and she’ll also reveal something new that she’ll be doing on stage.

Anything that Chaka has her hand & voice in leaves a lasting impression on those that are lucky enough to know her. She’s helped so many people in so many ways. I have the utmost admiration & respect for her for all the things she’s overcome & for who she is today! Shinin’ Star does really sound like the early Chaka, too! Love & respect to her, always!

No body loves Chaka Khan like I do and I mean NOBODY. I listen to her daily and all day from oldies to recent. I think she is the ONLY female singer in the world that’s the BEST. She can hit some really high notes and say words while doing so. She is truly amazing, others like Vesta and Me’lissa Morgan are good but Chaka is the best forever and ever…period!
