Conversation with Kelly Price

On our journey to discover who we are, often we discover that we aren’t just one dimensional so maybe our music shouldn’t be either. Kelly Price takes that to heart with her new album This Is Who I Am. This is Kelly’s first gospel album but reflects her diverse music taste. She wrote all but one of the songs and the album features collaborations with Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Donnie McClurkin, Richard Smallwood and Joe Ligon (Mighty Clouds of Joy). Who is Kelly Price? She’s a woman who spreads the good word and inspiration through her music.
Kelly’s previous albums have received critical acclaim, including her debut “Soul Of A Woman,” but she wrote her first song at 7 and has contributed vocals, written, and produced for Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston among countless others. She most recently wrote a book of inspiration titled Inscriptions of My Heart. Future plans for the dynamic singer/songwriter include a tour, a live concert DVD, another book and of course more gospel and R&B music.
In this conversation Kelly, who calls herself a contemporary Christian, tells us why this album is not religious, talks about how the music industry changed her and discusses her weight issue.

oooh! I love Kelly Price! but on another note, why are musicians shying away from calling their music christian/ gospel/religious? Dave Hollister said it and now Kelly’s saying it.
—ceeceeI’m just sayin’…
Great Interview Honey!!
—SunShyneThe Kelly Price Cafe sounds like a great idea!
—MwabiGREAT interview V!
*to TRY and address ceecee*
The majority of gospel music has become “church music” filled with church slang and church emotions ( playing certain chords on the organ, and everyone starts to shout.) It has gotten SO SO far from it original intent, to spread the Gospel or Good News of Jesus Christ and to minister to EVERYONE!
To me, not categorizing your music erases people’s perception of what your album is going to be, and take it for what it REALLY is!
Peace and Blessings!
—jah_luvI love everything about Kelly Price, and what she represents……… Luv u much and much success with your new cd release.
—ms smiththanks jah!
—ceeceeI guess i’m a little concerned with how they seem quick to dis-associate themselves from the genre. People who arent’ christian listen to it too…and besides people who buy their music will still buy it PLUS the gospel listening community.
I agree with Jah, it’s not what you label the music, it’s the message.
I really enjoyed this interview. Kelly’s got it together man. I wish her continued success.
—JenI love Kelly Price. I am so thankful she uses her voice in positive uplifting music.
—TanekaKelly we love you ! I enjoyed your interview . You are truley blessed by the best!
Great interview! I’m so glad to hear new music from her and I love the direction of this new album. :)
—kn0519To ceecee: I think most secular turned gospel artists don’t want to label their music gospel because they may not be traditional gospel artists and they don’t want to turn anyone away from traditional gospel or they may be in a transition period to where they don’t feel they are a “Saint” or what a “Christian” should be. Non-religious folks think that someone who calls themselves a Christian has everything in their life together and they are perfect, but that is not the case. We are all works in progress and until God calls us home, we will never be perfect, but people think otherwise. I think a better description of their music would be “gospel inspired by my life” or something that says this is what I feel about God and what he has done for me at this time in my life. Our relationship with God is ever-changing as we mature in His ways, so our praise and Worship of Him matures as we mature.
—JennyIT’s not “religious” meaning it is probably more relational…which is what church and God is supposed to be about. God doesn’t like “religion” he knew that it would be the barrier to keep us all seperated. He is after your heart not whether you listen to the traditional slow “church” songs or upbeat songs written about the Lord.
—S. RhoneKelly Price do your thing follow your heart.I love your new cd so keep on what your doing.

—shoogaalso..I really love the place you are in right now in your life…inner peace is a sanctum..God Bless YOU! and the fam..
—shoogaMaybe I’m biased because I was at the cathedral when this collection was recorded, but my family & I couldn’t wait for this to become available to the public! I brought two copies straight out the gate and am grateful for it being one of the best musical investments I’ve made in ‘06! Kelly really did change her outfits quite a bit that night and they sure did come out to the stage to powder her up between songs! But she had the place rocking! She had us in tears! She had us shouting and thanking God for our blessings! She was tremendous, as was Richard S, Donnie McC, Joe L, Vanessa B!! To see so many gospel celebs show out in support (Melonie Daniels, James Hall, Ron Grant, Eric Seats — on drums, I could go on…) — take my word — it was hot! Thanks HS!
—TrelKelly is so humble on this interview, and insights on all parts of her life including the weight was intriguing. To hear her talk and sing is an honor! I wish they would have done this interview on video. Kelly I wish they would put you on TV more! I can’t wait for that DVD to drop. I am going to pick that up ASAP. Kelly, I love you! :D
—DubbyaCKelly I’m a HUGE fan & always have dreamed about you singing one of gospel songs I’ve written. You are so humble & your personality & attitude shows you know you’re blessed & didn’t get to where you are without God in your life. Your True Fan/Tammera Williams
