Conversation with Conya Doss

Conya Doss could teach the singers of today a few things. Things like how to sing a song deep from within your heart so that we feel the story instead of just hear the notes, or how to skillfully mix dance grooves with beautiful ballads and make it all sound cohesive. She does have experience in the teaching field. Conya was working as a special education teacher in Cleveland when she decided to pursue her musical dreams. She attended the Cleveland School Of The Performing Arts (along with fellow alumnus Avant) and was a member of the duo Lyrik. She has written for 3LW and worked with Gerald Levert, producer Tony Nicholas and Paul Allen Of PAJAM.
Conya Doss has a very strong and soulful voice with a slight huskiness to it. The kind of voice that whether she’s singing at church or at a club, you know she can bring it. She brings it on Love Rain Down, which includes an extra song for the US release only (Get On My Nerves). Her third album features songs with an R&B feel but you also hear pop traces and hints of jazz.
In this conversation Conya talks about her early music influences, speaks on soul music’s reception in countries outside the U.S. and tells us why she almost quit the business after her debut album. You’ll hear music from her new album Love Rain Down, in stores October 17.
