Conversation with Sy Smith

Sy Smith may be the hardest working woman in show business. The Washington, D.C. born, L.A. resident has been a backup singer for Whitney Houston, Usher and Me’shell N’degeocello among others. As a songwriter she’s been nominated for an Emmy and co-wrote a song with Terry Lewis. She’s recorded a duet with Al Green (on the title song to the Showtime series Soul Food) and shared tracks with The Brand New Heavies and Ronny Jordan. In addition, she’s appeared in GAP commercials, sang on TV’s Ally McBeal Show, has her own production company and received two NAACP nominations for her performance in the musical “Body Language.” Her most current accomplishments include working for the past two seasons on American Idol, headlining a tour in China last summer and completing a video for “Fa Sho” from her critically acclaimed album The Syberspace Social.
All those accomplishments would have a less determined artist rest on their laurels. Not Sy Smith. She is a woman who loves her work and it shows. In her continuing quest to bless our ears with out of this world soul she spends countless hours creating new music in the studio and that’s when she’s not rocking stages with her band Deeznuts. All work and a lot of play makes Sy Smith the quintessential soul artist.
This was a fun conversation. We laughed a lot and talked about her motivation, her new ventures, working with members of her extended musical family and both her unofficial and official debut albums.

Hey V,
Great interview! I got that album that label didn’t want to put out because she was black (WOW!) I bet if she was singing about her milkshake or her neck and her back, they would have found a way to market her! Sad, but thanks to ARTIST like Sy for keepin’ it REAL!
Peace and Blessings!

—KNAnother great interview, Honey! I just love Sy Smith. “Can’t Hold Back” is my jam. That was the song on my Myspace page for a long minute (and is about to be again…LOL).
—ButtaSy Smith is the HOTNESS!!! I got the ‘Syberspace’ after hearing just one song!!!… She is just funky & soulful & eclectic and listening to this interview she just comes off as MAD COOL. I made a comment a few weeks ago how she just decided to comment on the Kim Hill interview just because she like the interview so much… I thought that was just dope.
—R7SoulkiddWell, if you have ever seen myspace, you know the real reason why I watched American Idol the last two seasons :-) SY SMITH
