Conversation with Teena Marie

Teena Marie has been successfully singing, writing, producing, and arranging music for almost thirty years, a rare jewel in today’s cubic zirconia music market. Although she has established her legacy as R&B royalty she continues to bestow more musical treasures with the release of Sapphire, her second album on Cash Money’s Classics label.
Teena updates her sound with a few polished uptempo tracks but shines on ballads like “Somebody Just Like You,” “Romantica” and “You Blow Me Away” that recall her authentic signature sound. She incorporates help from her musical family with appearances by Smokey Robinson, Kurupt, Gerald Albright and her daughter Alia Rose on the beautifully harmonious “Resilient (Sapphire).” Sapphire is a gem for Teena Marie fans and is dedicated to Rick James who continues to inspire her music. Teena explains “I really couldn’t deal with my pain and I think that God intervened. Actually, I felt like Rick was with me writing.”
On this edition of Soul 2 Soul Teena Marie talks about her longstanding music career, staying current in the contemporary music market and how she made history by initiating a change in law that affects a label’s control over an artist.

BRAVO!!!!! This is my favorite interview to date V. Ms. Teena just blows me away with her voice and her warm personality. She is a true example for all artists male and female alike. Twenty seven years in the game and she sounds and looks as good now as she did then. I remember being a kid growing up in NY listening to Square Biz in the park with the older kids while playing handball. That song always takes me back to those days. She is in a class all by herself, she is the TRUE Queen of R&B!!
—JenBravo Honey! I loved this interview…I have to agreed this is one of yur best interviews to date. I have been a fan of Lady T’s music since middle school…I have every album/CD except the Passion Play, which I will have to find one day. Peace.
—AndreV,
WOW! Back to back legends of this game Mr. Isley and now Lady T! Great interview as usual! That bass line in “Ooh Wee” will get you! Don’t have any memories of Lady T when I was growing up, like Jen (who just dated herself…lol..handball…) but thanks to iTunes, I can hear her classics! The new album sounds nice!
Peace and Blessings!

Looking forward to more..Cash Money got ONE right! Honey, KEEP ON! LOVING THE SITE!
—shoogaOnce again, Honey, you have done it again! One of my fav female vocalists in the game…EVA!
And I have to second that emotion re “Square Biz”, Jen…played handball on a constant in the boogie down…and sure was puttin that vinyl on trying to master Teena’s vocals! I have now succeeded in masterin, but back then…somebody shut that chile up! LOL
