Conversation with India.Arie

India.Arie on Soul 2 Soul

It’s been four years since platinum selling artist India.Arie released an album, the Grammy winning Voyage To India. Like most of us she’s gone through the trials and triumphs of just living but unlike the majority, she’s able to share her declarations of truth and faith to an established congregation of music fans.

The woman who has been singing empowering songs since her folksy Acoustic Soul debut album is a bit soft spoken on the phone, except when talking about her new album Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship. The album is her personal account of love and healing over the past three years. On “Testimony” she shares life lessons through songs and interludes about loving, living, and learning. Although the album seems to be a continuation of India’s past works of spiritual messages and songs about self-love this one is more of a personal testament as evidenced by her first single, the anthem like “I Am Not My Hair.”

Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship features a variety of guests including Akon, Rascal Flatts, Bonnie Raitt, Keb Mo and Victor Wooten and will be in stores June 27.

In this insightful and uplifting conversation on Soul 2 Soul India shares with us why this album is her most intimate to date and talks about the truth in her music.

This interview was re-broadcast on projectVIBE on Thursday, May 18.

This is a wonderful interview. I love her music. A lot of people who don’t write music or poetry do not understand that the things that you write is usually something you have been through. And sometimes life can be so melancholy. I hope she keeps writing the things she write I love her music. Her spirit is so beautiful. And her beauty is radiant. Such a wonderful artist.

    Hey V,

This was a great interview. It’s cool that Ms. Arie has made a career on sharing her thoughts and her feelings to the world. Everything isn’t gonna be “In Da Club” or betting your girlfriend was hot like her! This is TRUE art!

    Peace and Blessings!

Great interview…. I was VERY happy at the answer she gave about ‘the perception’ of her music. It’s something as a fan you FEEL it and to have her speak to it exactly the way you feel it was very cool.

You got Soul Music Super Stars in the spot now… you got artists like Sy Smith posting on your blog like us ‘average folk’..LOL. You in the BIG TIME now! *big smile*

I jus came home from work a lil while ago and da first thing I did was log on to check and see if the interview was posted. Was I in for a treat? *talkin like Napoleon* HECK YES! haha..I’ve listened to it a a few times. And I read into it a lil more everytime. It was great! Good to hear a few of her older tracks too. Well, ‘not-so-new’ tracks, cause in MY book they’ll never be old! I like the way she steps out, track after track, with that thing called TRUTH: Something that not everybody is ReaDy for, but PLenTy of people–like myself–APPreCiaTe. Tha makes her even more beautiful–insde and out. She puts her mind, heart and soul into her music and that alone will take her further in her career. I’m glad she was willing to speak on the issues of her album and the roots of her inspirations in the interview. It’s evident that she loves what she does, knows where/what she’s come from..and knows how make that come alive in her craft. It’s also good to see that she’s promoting and going on tour. I know the album release had been pushed back for some months. Now it seems like it’s finally coming together. And, once again, I’m excited! :) Hope summn works out so that I can go see her in concert when she comes to Memphis. Road trip. HELLO!

I can’t wait to pick up “Testimony..” Honey, thanks for the interview!!!

I have never heard of her before, but it was a cool interview and I really like what I’ve read about her here. Anyone ever hear of Dezarie? She teamed up with the reggae band Midnite (who are awesome in their own right) and she has some great messages and music as well. Check her out – I like the CD called Gracious Mama Africa

she’s as real as her music lol! she sounds very much like a friend of mine. went directly to notmyhair.com, love it! love india.arie! love honeysoul!
Can’t wait for her new CD to come out :) and i don’t know if she’ll ever read this, but i don’t think she has anything to worry about when it comes to the message in her music cos she always has nuggets of wisdom no matter how it’s wrapped, and the most important thing for me at least is i’m able to find them and use them in my life.

great interview!!! i’ve been an india fan from day one, and i am often amazed by her beauty(inside and out), strength and truth. in this interview she speaks of how she is a regular person and she has her ups and downs like everyone else. “i am not my hair” is my anthem. so many times i’ve been criticized for the way my hair is, and this song just put the icing on the cake of “even though i change my hair, i am not changing WHO or WHAT i am.”

the c.d. comes out the day after my birthday so i will be getting it and i plan to keep it in heavy rotation.

hey honey, keep the great interviews comin.

    peace and love.

    Kudos To You!!

I have recently becae aware of your radio site and I love it! I love your zen-like simplistic design yet creative with a mellow-smooth vibe. I also appreciate how you do research and preparation and really make an effort to let the artist shine and show their individuality. So from one Sista to another trying to bring their radio business goal to fruition I applaud you and encourage to keep doing what you do.

    Stay Positive!
