Conversation with Amel Larrieux

[Listen to Soul 2 Soul with Amel Larrieux][download podcast]
Amel Larrieux, the bravebird of infinite possibilities continues to represent the duality of vulnerability and strength through her music. Merging sounds of soul, jazz, folk, Middle Eastern and West African styles, Amel seems to explore more of her alto range on this album but her songwriting remains as introspective as ever. She addresses letting down the guard to be cared for in “Weary,” calls for respect with “Earn My Affections” and speaks of procrastination and self doubt with “Mountain of When.” Amel’s third album is a family affair with husband Laru continuing his role as producer and musical collaborator and their two daughters providing additional vocals. Morning may be a wake up call for all those sleeping on Amel Larrieux. The album is in stores, April 25. In this edition of Soul 2 Soul reveals her continuing struggle with self confidence, debates the politics of the music industry, and gives us an exclusive about her upcoming jazz album.
This interview will be rebroadcast on projectVIBE radio on Thursday, April 27 at 3pm CST.

“the bravebird of infinite possibilities…” That line is so ballah! AND “Morning may be a wake up call for those sleeping on Amel Larrieux…” BALLAH!!
—Jah_LuvI am such a HUGE fan of Amel Larrieux, I love all of her CDs including her latest Morning. I can’t pull myself away from Bravebird, OMG just an amazing CD. We’re all insecure about something so I can appreciate her being so candid but I can say without a doubt that she is one her way to being one of the greatest vocalist, songwriters of our generation. Just a beautiful person inside and out.
—Jeni love love love her!!! her personality does reflect in her music. can’t wait to get my hands on her new CD :)
—ceeceethanks honey for another great interview!
Honey, this interview is great! you were able to elicit some fabulous resonses! Amel is my absolute favorite singer so thank you much for featuring her!!!
—twinkleHey V, soooooo enjoyed this interview. It was so funny when you asked Amel will she do the group thing again and she started stuttering, and flash backing about how it takes too much energy, I was waiting for her to say hell to the naw!!lol. She know how difficult it can be working with different personalities. I dig how she is doing her independent thing and broke free from the machine now she can concentrate on her vision and not worry about her label not pushing her work if its too introspective. Amel is doing a Jazz album, yeaaaaaaaaah, see, thats why I’m glad she left the label and is doing her own thing, now she doesn’t have to be in a box and record only one kind of music. Must be nice to have a studio in your house, thats my goal, then I can use pro tools instead of mixcraft or audiocraft. When Amel said she likes singing with her eyes closed I get that, its like when you kiss or make love, you still there in the moment put you are in the zone yanno. I liked this one a lot. Can’t wait til the next.
—DeanI thoroughly enjoyed this interview and a closer look at Amel. It’s amazing how real she was and honest about her insecurities, feelings, career, and family. I’m glad to see that she’s not some diva but a down-to-earth sister with a truly amazing gift.
