A Honey Souldier Review: Floetry

Review: Floetry with special guest Goapele
by Stephanie D. Madison and Tamika Q. Harris

Monday, April 17, 2006 – House of Blues Chicago

It’s Monday, like 5:30 or so; and just as any other Monday I’m beat, but
going home, cooking and preparing for bed is not happening tonight, although
I could use a nap. I am just too excited that I am going to see Floetry tonight plus a stop for a jolt from Starbucks peps me right up.

When most people think of Floetry they start taking a little walk down memory lane, reminiscing about some special night when you were “feeling” that
special someone (well that’s how it is for me and my girls…lol) but tonight I’m going to the concert with my girls which is always fun and full of adventure.

We arrive on time for once in our lives, and the line is sick, and seeing how we don’t do lines we walked right across the street to Redfish restaurant and had a drink….besides it was a better idea than standing on the bridge of the Chicago River freezing with like 500 Soulheads. So after a drink, some eats and a
quick make-up check we make it back to the House of Blues, just as the line has come to an end. Everyone looked so anxious to get inside like they were giving something away, indeed they were, it was just not of the physical sense. The line outside was just a taste of what the inside of House of Blues looked like. It
was packed, so by the time we fought our way to the bar and got a drink we
had missed Goapele unfortunately, and thank goodness we didn’t miss any of Floetry’s set.

The show started off with a bang. Both Marsha and Natalie came out looking very casual and slim and trim I might add, they looked like they were hanging out with friends and family and that is the way they made us feel. They spoke to the audience and sent out so much love that the audience could not do anything but the same. The first song was “Floetic” from their first album. The girls had so much energy and were having so much fun that we couldn’t help but do the same. The entire time they were on stage they sang hit after hit. The show started off upbeat with hits like “Butterfiles” and “My Apology” then hit a pitch when Natalie did some powerful spoken word to the hot band playing in the background and Marsha crooning next to her. The message was to “Achieve Success by any means necessary.” This show was so empowering and moving; there is nothing and I mean nothing like hearing a live band play their asses off while one of the hottest groups out, blow you away. Close to the end of the show Marsha did “Feelings”, one of my favorite songs off the new CD and blew me away. We all have our favorite songs and we go to concerts hoping they’ll sing just a snippet of it, so when Marsha started singing “Say yes” (cause I hadn’t heard that song in a minute) I was done.

Before I went to the concert, everyone who I had spoken to about a Floetry concert told me it was one of THE BEST shows they have ever been to. Now I see why. Those girls are the truth!

I didn’t get home til like 1:30am and had to work the Next day….only a Good man can get me to pull that one, so I guess Floetry has me “catching feelings.” Definitely a must see show. I went home and pulled out their old CD for the morning drive. Much love to Floetry.

    Great and outstanding review Mika!

Floetry and Goapele was in Baltimore last night, and the show was hot! When Natalie was doing her spoken word, I was having A.D.D moments because the band was rockin!

Goapele is so flippin pretty! Her band was on point too!

    Peace and Blessings!

After Natalie gave big ups to George Bush in Vibe, I just couldn’t listen to Floetry anymore. Condoleeza Rice is not a credit to black folks.
