Conversation with Joi

Nothing deters good music. Not label changes, not relationship changes, not changes in release dates and not when you’re Joi. The tenacious and talented singer, songwriter and producer has received critical acclaim on every funk/rock/hard to classify album since her 1994 Pendulum Vibe and has built a loyal following of supporters who appreciate her originality. After numerous delays in releasing her fourth album, Joi delivers an album as fresh and innovative as her personal style. Tennessee Slim is the Bomb is being released on her own Joilicious label and is available now. In this edition of Soul 2 Soul Joi candidly discusses the obstacles of staying creative in the music business, the importance of her live shows and talks about falling in love a different way.

With the first note of the first song, it is sooooooo worth the wait. Truly appreciate the sista for having the perserverance to maintain through all the garbage to get this out.

HI HONEY SOUL SSLURP DOT COM . I REALLY ENJOYED , WAIT A
MINUTE CORRECT THAT, I ENJOI THE CONVERSATION BETWEEN YOU
AND JOI . ESPECIALLY ABOUT LOVE & HAVING THE COURAGE TO
MOVE ON . YOU KNOW , FROM MY EXPERIANCE I COULD TELL YOU
THINGS WE DO , BUT DO’NT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT LOVE . THE FOR
BETTER OR WORSE PART . THE SINGLE PEOPLE DO SINGLE THINGS
PART . THE NOT MY MATE PART . THE I MESSED UP PART . THE
PARTING .MANY OF US FALL IN LOVE & OPEN OUR CHAPTERS TO
SOMEONE ONLY TO START ALL OVER AGAIN . REALLY SOME OF US
THINK WE’RE IN LOVE BECAUSE WE’RE SO USED TO THEM BEING
AROUND ALL THE TIME . REAL LOVE IS BEYOND ALL THAT . REAL
LOVE KNOWS THAT THE DEVIL IS A LIAR . REAL LOVE IS FORGIVING AND PRAYING FOR STRENGHTH TO LEARN TO LOVE ONCE
AGAIN . I’VE NOT BEEN INNOCENT OUT OF 27 YEARS OF MARRIAGE
TO EVEN SAY I’M PERFECT . NOR IS MY WIFE , BUT IN MY MIND
I DO’NT WANNA KNOW THAT . I HAD TO REALIZE WHEN I SLIPPED
SHE TURNED HER HEAD AND CRIED . THAT PAINED ME . I THOUGHT
NOTHING COULD EVER BREAK IN BETWEEN US TWO . BUT THE DEVIL
KNOWS YOUR WEAKNESS & GOD KNOWS YOUR HEART . I DID SOMETHING I’D THOUGHT I’D NEVER DO ! I GOT DOWN ON MY KNEES AND PRAYED THAT GOD BRING US BACK TOGETHER IN LOVE
LIKE WE WERE AT FIRST .HE BLESSED ME WITH A GREAT WOMAN ,
AND I’M NOT GONNA LET THE DEVIL MESS IT UP AGAIN . SAYING
I LOVE YOU IS EASY TO SAY , BUT TO PRODUCE IT IS ANOTHER .
    *TIZ*

    Great interview as usual V!

Again, I’ve never heard of Joi until coming over here! She is great though, I love her music. I like her “tell it like it is” personality. Sad, but true about female producers in the so called “game”. You would think on the non-commercial side of the industry, people would be more resceptive to that idea.

My Sista, this is one of the BEST interviews I’ve heard on a long damn time. I’ve loved Joi ever since I discovered her music many years ago. Tennessee Slim IS the bomb.

Great interview, Honey. Joi is right – she should be pulling in more dough. It’s all about me driving around Little Five Points (Atlanta) looking for her CD two weeks ago. I see have to be a little more patient.

Do whatever you can to catch Joi in concert. Money well spent, I tell ya.

Oh and I will say I could have done without all the “Uncle speaks” segments. Maybe if I still got high then I could swing with George. Sheeitt brown juice just ain’t enough to get me to understanding that man.

V you did it again, what a great interview. She sounds like a new yorker to me rather than a southern girl, a sistah whose been hurt before. The music industry i.e. the machine and lost loves makes you hard like that. I get Joi though. Sometimes you have to make your own opportunities and empower yourself through verse. Being an independent and easy, freedom comes with a price, you pay your own way. I applaude Joi for that. I’m from knoxville tennessee so, big up to the tennessee artists. I wish her success with label. Thanks for posting this one V I felt this sista
