Friday Freestyle

Friday, November 18, 2005

I started with Jill Scott's background singer V. His CD will be released in the states January 31. He is next, mark my words (note to Trent, ya girl's got it on lock ;)). I included my favorite song from Jonz, the hotness of Joi with a song from her upcoming "Tennessee Slim Is The Bomb" (I'm unsure of the release date on that one). Making it even more soulful is the beautiful voice of Yahzarah on a Nicolay track, the brilliance of Lewis Taylor, Raul Midon and Steve Spacek. I had to throw in some Raheem Devaughn for the goodness, some Pete Belasco from way back when (shout to Jam), Alice Smith (who Simone told me about many moons ago), Anthony Hamilton from the In The Mix soundtrack and I ended with our girl of the fierce fro, the super talented Leela James.

Soul Watch: Russell Taylor

Remember this name...Russell Taylor. That's the name of an up and coming soul star who is just waiting to reserve his spot in your cd players and record collections but he's already making a place for himself on the soul scene.

From his bio:
Rooted in Philadelphia and settled in New York City, Russell Taylor was enveloped by a rich musical legacy. From Gamble and Huff to Michael Jackson, songs of emotional love, social commentary and just having a good time provided a foundation for one of the most talented singer/songwriters bubbling under the radar. His music moves between nouveau soul and vintage blues with a caramel smooth ease, moving audiences through an emotional journey with each show.

The Philadephia native's soulful sound was influenced by Donny Hathaway, Chaka Khan, Gamble & Huff, Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, and Al Green. He's already shared the stage with Mary J. Blige, Tweet, and Lalah Hathaway and he just rocked it at the Temple Bar in LA. Russell was featured on the Ministry of Sound collection with "Fool for Love," a top 10 single on the European charts. Currently he's in the studio working and creating, as well as writing for others. Look for his solo CD at the beginning of 2006.

He's got such a beautiful tone to his voice. It's reminiscent of a combination of Eric Benet and Rahsaan Patterson but he's got his own unique sound and style. He's just great. Visit his site to check out his music (Somewhere In Between is currently my favorite). Good luck Russell, we've got our eye on you.

Soul Watch: Tamara Wellons

Wednesday, August 31, 2005

The voice in it's pure form, without musical accompaniment or technical production, is a beautiful thing. The first thing I usually do when I visit an artist's site is go straight to the music. That's exactly what I did on Tamara Wellon's site. There was an acapella track so that's the one I decided to listen to first. What a beautiful voice!

Listen to Moonwalk (acapella).mp3

Listen to Fly Me To the Moon.mp3

from her site:

"I finally realized to get the best out of each performance; I had to push myself to higher and unplanned heights. It's a beautiful and courageous feeling to challenge myself vocally.' she says."
"As she prepares to work on her second album release and continues to break in stages, Tamara's voice grows. Her foundation, influences and natural soul reverb in a voice that is a force full of passion, southern grace, sensuality, and edginess."

Tamara's CD, "Introducing, Tamara Wellons" is available through her site. Another project entitled "Tamara in Wonderland" is available for free download. Currently Tamara is working with poet Naima Jamal on an EP that will be released this winter and working on a full length album. Her jazzed-up version of Nirvana's hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit" will be released soon. Tamara Wellons is definitely one to watch. Make sure you check her out. Thank you to DJ Stylus for bringing Tamara to my attention.

Soul Watch: Gabbie McGee

Thursday, August 18, 2005

Gabbie McGee is just a ball of personality. She's one of those people who is just instantly likeable because she's just so positive and upbeat and humble. Her personality is what stood out for me about her until I heard her music. I was very impressed. She has a CD out entitled Certified Soul and the minute I heard the first song I was hooked. Listen to "Boobie's Groove" below. The rest of the CD follows suit.

From her website:

Born in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, Gabbie McGee is a singer by design. With a voice that can rage like a storm, or flow like a mellow stream; Gabbie uses a creative concoction of blues, jazz, and soul to draw listeners into her world of sunshine and colors. Gabbie is what the industry calls the "total package". As an accomplished writer, vocalist, and pianist she's no stranger to the intricacies of the music business.

The former Miss Black Atlanta has honed her craft for years showcasing her amazing stage presence during Miss America Preliminary Pageants, Off-Broadway musicals, The Showtime at the Apollo Summer Tour 2001 and numerous charitable functions. Inspired by the richness of southern culture, Gabbie is a giving spirit with a burning desire to bring back the beauty of music.

Please show her some love and support. Gabbie's site.

(paraphrasing the album description) A compilation from DJs and electronic artists such as Thievery Corporation, Louie Vega, Mark Farina, Marques Wyatt, and Afro-Mystik. It features afro-beat, spoken word poetry, soulful house, dub reggae and Om lounge-style down-tempo tracks. Proceeds will go towards NextAid's efforts to help millions of African children orphaned by AIDS.

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten listen
I was trying to think of how to describe her sound. It's sort of like a toned down pop version of Esthero. I included one of her songs, I Bruise Easily, on a recent radio blog.

New Music Tuesday

Tuesday, July 12, 2005

Album Previews:

Slim Thug - Already Platinum (tracklist)

Bow Wow - Wanted (tracklist)

Fatty Koo - House of Fatty Koo (tracklist)

Flipsyde - We The People (tracklist)

Cafe Soul All-Stars Love Pages is a collection of songs by producers Clarence Smith (founder of Essence Magazine), Duke Jones and Norman Connors. The album features songs from Maysa, Peabo Bryson, George Benson, Glenn Jones, Vesta, Christopher Williams, Roy Ayers, Kenny Garrett, and many others singing new, never before released material. In stores August 23. Preview tracks here.

New Releases have been updated. I recommend Jaguar Wright's Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul [listen]. The Justus League is representing this week with releases from Buckshot & 9th Wonder (hear a few tracks here), L.E.G.A.C.Y. and The Away Team.

It's beginning to look like return of the old school. Aaron Hall (formerly of Guy), Charlie Wilson (formerly of the Gap Band) and Keith Sweat (fomerly of the R&B school of beggars) all have upcoming releases. Speaking of old school, Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire's upcoming Cd's have been pushed back again *sigh*.

I'm anticipating Goapele's latest. She looks amazing on the album cover.

Listen To Craig David's new single All The Way and watch the video here (thanks Trent for this and the Slim Thug info)

If you haven't checked out the Video Soul section in a minute, make sure you do now. I've added some new videos from K-Os, Chino XL, Akon, and M.I.A. among others. Just when I got "galang galang" and "pull up the people pull up the poor" chants outta my head, now I have "whuh ya wan bucky done gun" in my head. Thanks M.I.A.

Thanks Khadji for the heads up about Havana. Her debut L.I.F.E. (Living In Fearless Emotion) features production from Nicolay, Waajeed, S1 and others. It's in stores this summer.

Thanks Alan for letting me know about Motown Magic. They play Tamla Motown tracks 24/7.

Preview Yamama'Nym & PPP EPK

Saturday, May 14, 2005

Who is Yamama'Nym? (for the ebonically challenged that's "yo mama and 'nem")

from their site:

Hand picked by Tre Barr (producer/writer) and Dennis Turner (music director/bass player), Yamama'nym, was formed in 2002 as a collective of eclectic musicians and vocalists with diverse musical backgrounds. Combining sultry southern soulful sounds with a touch of uptown Jazz and downtown R&B swagger, healthy servings of soul, and pinches of gospel, Yamama'Nym has been stirring up audiences since their inception.

Listen to their CD "Due Time"

Xan, one of the musical connections I have made through this blog (and a very sweet, poetic soul who keeps me laughing through email) kept a sista on her toes when she asked about them. I had put them on the backburner and probably never would have gotten around to it if not for her. When I asked her to write a few words about them, these are some of her comments, "I like their style ...Kinda like Kindred the Family Soul" "Their transition was nice. From jazz, to R&B, to gospel, etc. They're pretty high in my book right about now". Her favorites are "Celestial Joy", "Beautiful" and "Obsession". Thank you Xan, there will be a pop quiz later, LOL.

Get a behind the scenes look at the Platinum Pied Pipers [ real | wm ] (from okayplayer.com). Their album Triple P was released on May 10th. It's worth picking up.

album description:

From humble beginnings as guests on a Rewind! compilation two years ago to releasing the soundtrack to the summer of 2005 the Platinum Pied Pipers have made many new friends with their on-stage antics and essential new twist on modern hip hop and soul. The dynamic PPP duo is made up of Waajeed, a collaborator with Jay Dee and Dwele and a founding member of Slum Village, and Saadiq a music student of Motown-er Barrett Strong. Their unique sound is both a polished and catchy but also edgy and raw blend of Detroit hip-hop and soul. Guests include Jay Dee, Spacek and SA-RA Creative Partners to the heavily featured home-grown talents of Tiombe Lockhart, Georgia and Invincible.

Preview Nivea, Smokey plus other updates

Monday, May 02, 2005

Nivea is back with her sophomore album
Nivea - Complicated listen

Classic soul from the green-eyed love bandit
Smokey Robinson - My World, The Definitive Collection listen

tracklistings below

*updated 5/3
Both albums will be released today. Speaking of which...New Releases have been updated. I would highly recommend the Gordon Chambers CD (it was actually released in 2004 but Amazon is slow, lol). You may not know the name but if you are a fan of Anita Baker, Angie Stone, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Whitney Houston...then you know his work. He's even won a grammy. I actually had another underground soul artist planned to spotlight but since his CD is becoming widely available, I may spotlight him instead...before he blows up (fingers crossed). He is definitely one to watch. Let me know in comments if you would be interested in previewing his album (although EJ beat me to it). Howard Hewett has a new CD too. Wow, the stories I could tell from back in the day about Howard...unfortunately, they only existed in my fantasies, LOL

(edit: I decided to go with my original pick for underground artist. But Gordan Chambers will be coming up soon)

Single of the Week
Billie Miles is the iTunes Free download, make sure you pick that up. She has a very unique voice and her sound is kind of jazzy pop.

If you haven't had a chance to listen to Me'shell Ndegeocello's latest, make sure you do that today. I will be removing it tomorrow.

On a sidenote, I love the pic of Faith on the cover of Vibe

Preview Bobby Valentino & Us3

Monday, April 25, 2005

Bobby Valentino's self titled debut is available for preview. The former member of Mista (Blackberry Molasses was my jam) wrote most of the songs and worked with Mista producers Tim & Bob. He says "I really believe this album will set me apart from other male vocalists, especially since I hold females in high esteem. My parents, who are still together, are my inspiration for the type of music that I make"
Listen to Bobby Valentino - Bobby Valentino

Do you remember the song Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)? The band who made that hit, Us3 (with the addition of Brooklyn rapper MC Reggi Wyns and singer South African born Mpho Skeef) is back with an album called Questions. I've only listened to the first few tracks but so far so good. It's got the same jazzy hip-hop feel that made Cantaloop a hit.

Curtis Mayfield Remixed

This sounds interesting. Curtis Mayfield's classics have been remixed by Grandmaster Flash, King Britt, Louie Vega and others. I'm on my way to listen to this one right now.

listen

...and if anyone cares....

From allhiphop: 50 Cent & The Game have decided to lay their beef to rest & will make a formal announcement at a press conference today (March 9) at the Schomburg Center For Research in Black Culture in NYC at 2:00 pm. "Game & I need to set an example in the community," 50 said today. "50 and I are proving that real situations and real problems can be solved with real talk," Game added.

I'm all for peaceful resolution and doing this on the anniversary of Biggies death is poignant and all but, just like I said a few days ago, this looks likes that whole beef thing was a gimmick to get more publicity....whateva!...back to Curtis

Music Connections

Thursday, February 17, 2005

It's all about the connections. Yall know what I say...music is for sharing and I'm especially grateful when it's shared with me. Thanks to anyone who has ever left a comment or sent me an email to give me a heads up on some good music. Also thanks to my small circle for keeping me in the music loop (yall know who you are).

I was just talking to EJ today about Julie Dexter and then a visitor, Camille, left a message pointing me to Julie's site. I took a chance and typed in her name.com in my browser and it came up. Excuse my excitement but I'm grooving as I'm typing this. This is one I have really been anticipating. You can hear and purchase her latest CD "Conscious" here. Also, there is a preview of an album by Michael Johnson, who I'm unfamilar with, but I will be checking it out after I listen to Julie. Thanks Camille.

You can hear snippets of BeBe Winan's new album "Dream" here. The album, his first studio album in four years, will be released February 22. One of the singles on the album "Miracle of Love" featuring Angie Stone has been nominated for a Dove Award as Best Contemporary Gospel Recorded Song of the Year.

In doing my part to spread some more internet kinship, I wanted to give a special shout out to DJ Ohsokool from NY radio station WHCR 90.3 FM. He and co-host Ms. Kia Star interviewed Joi on his "SugaTreats" radio show back in October. Joi has a forthcoming album entitled Tennessee Slim Is The Bomb. I'm looking forward to this one. What 's New

New Releases have been updated. I was looking forward to Julie Dexter's newest but they pushed the date back to Feb. 22. OK, they are making it hard for me to want do a new release radio.blog this friday.

Speaking of things not getting done, I've been slacking again on updating the Listening Booth with new music so here's a hot Nas track, Talk of New York to make up for it. Did I mention I was a Nas fan and we have the same birthday? Ok, maybe I mentioned that once...or 200 times, LOL.

From okayplayer.com, some Foreign Exchange "Connected" Tour video with Little Brother and Darien Brockington. Also from OKP, an mp3 from Foreign Exchange live, and some new sounds from Lawless Element produced by Madlib and Magnif (look under "now playing").

MTV is leaking Omarion's "O". Can someone listen for me and tell me if it's worth the time?

"Come on, it's a fashion show," Rock told the magazine. "What straight black man sits there and watches the Oscars? Show me one. And they don't recognize comedy, and you don't see a lot of black people nominated, so why should I watch it?"
That statement by Oscar host Chris Rock in Entertainment Weekly supposedly has some academy members calling for his removal as host. Maybe I have a strange sense of humor but the truth can be funny and what's untrue in this statement? I guess they thought they hired Cuba Gooding Jr., LOL.

From EUR. America's Next Top Model Eva Pigford's will be the new "booty" of Nelly's Apple Bottom Jeans.

Will Smith's "Hitch" set the record for the best debut weekend for a romantic comedy with $43.1 million in its first three days. A property co-owned by his wife Jada has been seized in a drug trafficking investigation. Jada is not a suspect in the probe.

If you haven't seen enough Grammy pics already (under headlines) here are some from Usher's private grammy party.

Single of the Week

The iTunes free download single of the week is Urban Mystic's Long Ways. I really like this one. I'll have to give his album another listen.

New Releases have been updated. K-Ci & JoJo and the O'Jay's release their past hits and all new tracks from Brian McKnight, Krayzie Bone, One.Be.Lo., Big Pooh (of Little Brother), Shuggie Otis and others.

Alternative rapper Sage Francis' Healthy Distrust has been added to the Listening Booth section

New Brian, Will's Soundtrack

Thursday, February 03, 2005

Preview the new albums from Brian McKnight, Gemini, and the soundtrack from Will Smith's new movie Hitch in the Listening Booth section. Both will be released on Feb. 8.

Common is shooting a video for his new single "Corners". Read about it on his site. If you haven't heard it yet, check it out in the Listening Booth section.

Oprah's presentation of Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God airs on Sunday, March 6. Halle Berry stars as Janie. I'm really looking forward to this one..and not just because Michael Ealy is in it (although that doesn't hurt, LOL)

One of the great things about having this blog is that sometimes folks hip you to new music like Ian did with Bathgate. I got some interesting tracks from a 6 piece hip hop group out of NYC called G. Band Free (thanks Chip). The songs have a kind of jazzy/hip hop feel. I liked a track called "It's All Right" and thought I would pass it on to you. Give it a listen and let me know what you think. I added iTunes R&B/Soul and Hip Hop/Rap new releases for all you iTunes addicts like me. I've also moved the free iTunes download single of the week to "New Releases" from the radio.blog section. Speaking of which, this week's free single is the Bronx rapper K.V.'s "Hoodstomp"

New CD's from Tina Turner and Brazilian Girls have been added to the "Listening Booth" section. New videos from John Legend, 50 Cent and a few others have been added to "Video Soul".

Free Downloads

Tuesday, January 18, 2005

iTunes is offering a free download of Brooke Valentine's Girlfight

I heard it first from funkdigital.com, and now okayplayer.com is offering a Pete Rock remix of One.Be.Lo's Deceptacons (clean version). You can also preview songs from his new CD S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M. (Sounds Of Nashid Originate Good Rhymes And Music)

*sidenote - I changed the "Just Released" link to "New Releases" and have included a list of upcoming CD's. Of course I couldn't include every new release so instead opted for those I am anticipating like Vanessa Williams who is doing a remake of 70's love songs that sounds interesting and of course, as usual, she looks gorgeous on the cover.

Listen to the full length CDs of Jay-Z and R. Kelly "Unfinished Business" and Trick Daddy "Thug Matrimony" in the Flava In Ya Ear section. Both will be released Oct. 26.

Twista will be reissuing his Kamikaze CD on Nov. 2 with 2 bonus tracks, So Sexy Chapter II and Y'all Who Know. The link I have was supposed to be that CD but after listening to it I discovered it was the original release. I posted it anyway for those who havent heard it and if I come across the reissue with the 2 new singles, I'll post that too.

Let me take a minute to swoon over the Mos Beautiful Mos Def so I can be objective...he does not disappoint on this one, it's well worth the wait. OK, maybe I can't be objective, just go listen for yourself, lol. Usher is looking pretty good on that cover (here's the larger version), and if you enjoyed the original Confessions (which I did) this is more of the same.
