Underground Soul: Conya Doss

Conya Doss could teach the singers of today a few things. Things like how to sing a song deep from within your heart so that we feel the story instead of just hear the notes, or how to skillfully mix dance grooves with beautiful ballads and make it all sound cohesive. She does have experience in the teaching field. Conya was working as a special education teacher in Cleveland when she decided to pursue her musical dreams. In fact, she was still teaching and moonlighting as a singer when she released her exceptional debut album A Poem About Ms. Doss.

Conya Doss has a very strong and soulful voice with a slight huskiness to it. You know, the kind of voice that whether she's singing at church or at a club, you know she can bring it. She brings it on Just Because, her second album that features a variety of songs with an R&B feel but you also hear gospel traces and hints of jazz.

Conya has been singing since the age of five. She attended the Cleveland School Of The Performing Arts (along with fellow alumnus Avant) and was a member of the duo Lyrik with childhood friend Stacy Richardson who now sings back up for Anthony Hamilton. She has written for 3LW and worked with Gerald Levert, producer Tony Nicholas and Paul Allen Of PAJAM. Her musical influences include Stevie Wonder, Angela Winbush, Donnie Hathaway and Minnie Ripperton. "Just Because" is available at iTunes, Amazon and CD Baby.
