Underground Soul: Five Point Plan

The San Francisco four man, one woman band known as Five Point Plan has been called the heir to the Brand New Heavies and Incognito. Like those bands and ala Sade, Five Point Plan features a dynamic lead singer, Latrice Barnett, whose sultry vocals breathe personality into every song. The band also features the musicianship of Jordan Glasgow (keyboards), Tim Carter (drums, percussion), Michael Cruz (bass, background vocals), and David Metzner (guitar). Barnett along with different members of the band wrote every song on the 2002 released "Rare," their follow-up to their self titled debut in 1999.

I would describe their sound as a very chilled out mixture of jazz and soul with a touch of electronica. "Rare" is one of those CD's you put on and you immediately like the first few seconds of what you've heard. Keep listening, it only gets better. Strangely, it sounds even better in a dark, candlelit room (especially the last track Take Me). I guess that makes it great mood music. The band cites Me'shell N'degeocello, D'angelo, Jill Scott, and Jamiroquai as their influences and they have played dates with Sade, India.Arie, and the Counting Crows. This extra-smooth CD is available at iTunes, Amazon and CD Baby. Visit their website here.
